Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, died when she was a small child, forcing her mother to help support the family by working as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school after just two years to take on a acting career.
